Box Hill South residents to receive Fashion First Aid

Residents of Box Hill South will have the opportunity to learn how to save damaged clothes and revive tired looking items from their wardrobes in an online workshop.

The workshop, called “Fashion First Aid” is part of a series dedicated to saying goodbye to fast fashion and encouraging sustainable wardrobes by teaching the skills required to mend and repair items rather than replacing them. According to the World Wildlife Foundation (WWF), Australians dispose of around 3,000 kilograms of textile and fast fashion waste every five minutes.

The workshop will be led by “stain slayer” Christian Reitano and “mending master” Erin Lewis-Fitzgerald. Reitano is an environmentalist who is devoted to extending the lifespan of many items, including clothing. She has numerous tricks to alter, clean and repair items, and will demonstrate these during the session.

Lewis-Fitzgerald has displayed examples of her mending in various Adelaide and Melbourne exhibitions, and has authored a book on the subject, titled “Modern Mending”. She has been teaching mending skills to an audience online for some time and is adept at working virtually.

A second workshop, “The Art of Secondhand Shopping and Styling”, will be held in November. Event organisers will often use flyer printing for distribution in the lead-up to workshops like this to generate awareness.

The online Zoom workshop will be held on Saturday, October 24 from 2pm until 3pm. For more information and to view other available workshops, see the Humanitix website.
