Box Hill South partnership supports dementia sufferers

Box Hill South Community House prides itself on providing programmes that link the community and promote individual growth. It’s this approach that has seen the not-for-profit organisation partner with Umbrella Dementia Cafes to connect Australian families impacted by dementia to one another.

Umbrella Dementia Cafes promote connection, awareness, choice and inclusivity. This innovative support system creates a safe social environment for those suffering with dementia and their care-givers to make new friends and to feel supported in the daily challenges they face. Attendees are able to participate in various activities, enjoy a cup of tea or a luncheon as they share ideas, referrals and discuss issues pertinent to the care of their loved ones.

Local volunteers and an Umbrella Dementia leader facilitate each event to ensure that the participants’ interests and needs are met.

This type of event provides a valuable community service and supports those who may feel isolated by the effects of dementia. Organisations often use brochure printing to create materials to advertise programmes and activities, which are then distributed to the local community to create awareness.

These social events are open to those of any age who suffer with dementia and who continue to live within their community. They take place bi-monthly at the Box Hill South Neighbourhood House. Dates and times vary and contact details for interested parties are available on its website.
