Box Hill South residents didn’t need to head into central Melbourne to celebrate Australia Day as there was a party marking the occasion at the nearby Whitehorse Civic Centre.
The event was organised by the City of Whitehorse council and included a twilight concert and fireworks display, marking the anniversary of the country’s founding.
The concert, which happened on Saturday January 26th, had something for everyone with children’s entertainment provided by The Mudcakes. Singer Mahalia Barnes, still bursting from her success on hit show The Voice Australia, entertained the crowd alongside The Soul Mates before top U2 tribute The U2 Show rocked the stage to finish the concert.
The celebration ended with a 15 minute fireworks display which was screened for those who couldn’t get a good viewing position. Prior to the concert there were free fairground rides, entertainment and food stalls so locals could make the most of the family day out.
Earlier on, Australia Day was marked with the presentation of awards and a citizenship ceremony took place in the Whitehorse Centre theatre.
The rides were open from 4.30pm. After children enjoyed the rides, the concert, which was free, took place between 6pm and 10pm with the fireworks directly afterwards.
The event was held on the Whitehorse Civic Centre lawns in Whitehorse Road, Nunawading. Poster printing was used to advertise the celebrations to the local community. Many Posters had information such as phone numbers and websites, allowing revellers to find more information.
