Voters elect to call new civic space Beenleigh Town Square

Residents from Slacks Creek, Queensland, and throughout the Logan City Council area have voted on a name to revitalise the Beenleigh CBD civic space.

The area will now be officially known as Beenleigh Town Square when it opens later in 2015.

The name was selected from a shortlist of three that included Yalburru Place, which attracted 24.6 per cent of the votes, and The City Green, with 15.9 per cent.

In total, 414 people took the opportunity to cast a vote, according to Logan City Councillor Luke Smith.

He said the council considered the community in and around Beenleigh to be an integral part of the process to name the space, because residents would be the ones visiting the location on a regular basis.

The naming process began earlier in the year when the council called for submissions, and from the 83 received, three options were selected, he said.

Cr Smith said the next step is to develop the town square branding for use on signage, flyer printing and other marketing material in preparation for its opening.

It is expected the branding will include a road motif that jointly celebrates the new town square, and the urban history of the suburb in which it will be a feature.

To date, an estimated 60 per cent of construction works have been completed on the new town square and, according to a council spokesperson, plans for the official opening are already underway.
