Unfortunately, funding for driving lesson initiatives in the area is running short and disadvantaged people could find it harder to get a licence. Clocking 100 practice hours is a time consuming and costly task.
Families don’t always have access to a suitable car, and can find it hard to pay for lessons. Other young people don’t have parental support. In order to assist, volunteer driving instructors have been offering free lessons to locals.
According to Lachlan Sherrington, driving instructor co-ordinator, Logan is a good location for teaching and Slacks Creek employers are hoping that more funding can be provided for the instructors. A special program has been created to assist disadvantaged learners. Called ‘Braking the Cycle’, it sees volunteers help young people to get onto the road safely.
Bob Clarke is involved with the scheme. He said:
“My goal is to get them their licence as quick as possible and having fun doing it. They’re good people, they’re fun people to be with and a lot of them don’t have the confidence that possibly I might have.”
Clarke also spends time finding items in newspapers and magazines that might help with job seeking. At present, more than 70 young adults are supported by Braking the Cycle and Clarke’s effort is invaluable.
