South East Queensland schools NAIDOC art competition now on

The South East Queensland Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander group will be running a NAIDOC art competition this year and it is open to all enrolled students in the South East Queensland region.

The contest will showcase the children’s artistic talents as well as encourage a greater knowledge of indigenous culture within the local community.

National NAIDOC week is held each year in Australia and recognises not only the history, but also celebrates the contributions that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people have made to the country, through a range of community activities and awards for achievement.

Last year, two Year 6 students from Mabel Park State School in Slacks Creek, were nominated and became proud recipients of NAIDOC awards for student leadership and excellence.

NAIDOC week’s success will depend on groups to organise events which are meaningful to their local community. Groups planning an event can advertise using Promotional Products which can include the NAIDOC national logo.

The theme for 2019 is “Voice. Treaty. Truth. Let’s work together for a shared future”.

The student art competition is currently open and closes on Friday, April 5th with the winning artwork to be entered into the South East Region NAIDOC awards in June.

National NAIDOC week will be celebrated this year from Sunday 7th July until Sunday 14th July.
