A Heart Foundation Award has recognised Logan City Council for its ongoing initiatives to fight heart disease, and the work it is doing to provide a helping hand to assist residents in Slacks Creek, Queensland and surrounding areas in enjoying active and healthy lifestyles.
Council was awarded the 2015 Heart Foundation Local Government Award for Queensland in the category for populations more than 25,000.
Chief Executive Officer Heart Foundation Queensland Stephen Vines said the Council had excelled in a number of areas, including its efforts towards creating a more user-friendly cycleway network that contributed to establishing a walkable, connected and safe neighbourhood.
He also praised Council’s initiative in introducing healthy living courses that could be enjoyed by residents of all ages.
Council has used Brochures and Flyers to spread the word about the free fitness programmes, which urge residents to be active and eat well to help minimise the risk of heart disease. Vines said he applauded initiatives such as this that created healthier communities.
Logan City Council Mayor Pam Parker said Council would continue to develop similar programmes to promote a healthier lifestyle for residents.
She said in addition to subsidising low-cost and free lifestyle and physical activity courses for residents, Council also ensured the area was well catered for with sporting facilities and parks.
