Soul II Soul sprang to life in 1989 with their debut single called ‘Keep on Movin’, featuring impressive lead vocals from Caron Wheeler. This was followed by the album ‘Club Classics Vol 1’ that sold millions of Copies in the UK and US. Their next single was the smash-hit ‘Back to Life (However Do You Want Me)’, giving the group their first number one in many countries and earning a Grammy in the US. Soul II Soul have always been all about inclusivity and bringing people together – the band’s slogan reads:
“A happy face, a thumpin’ bass, for a lovin’ race.”
Founder Jazzie B was given an OBE in 2008 for services to music. When he was awarded an Ivor Novello award in the same year, he was hailed as:
“The man who gave British soul music a soul of its own”.
