History presentation details confirmed in Prestons area

Prestons locals are invited to attend an upcoming history event scheduled for early September.

The event will be hosted in celebration of History Week, and this year, the theme is “Water Stories”.

The presentation will be delivered by Richard de Grijs, professor of astrophysics and a passionate speaker on astronomy, maritime history and astrophysics. He has been recognised for his contributions to medical humanities and history, and has received awards from the University of Canterbury, Macquarie University and the Australian Academy of Science.

During the event, attendees will follow the incredible journey of William Dawes.

Dawes was an astronomer who arrived on the First Fleet in 1788. He built two observatories near Sydney’s modern city centre, and his life was full of setbacks, ambition, and surprising encounters.

Dawes is now immortalised at Dawes Point, which is the site of the Sydney Harbour Bridge.

Organisers of cultural events can connect with Stationery printers to create attractive, practical and meaningful giveaways for participants.

“From the First Fleet to the Harbour Bridge: Sydney’s astronomical beginnings” will be held on Monday, 8 September 2025. The venue will be Liverpool City Library, which can be found at 52 Scott St. The presentation starts at 1:00 PM and will conclude at 2:30 PM. Attendance is free, and more details are available on the Eventbrite website.
