Road funding to support new Badgerys Creek airport on the way

In the first year of an eight-year $2.9bn plan to establish and upgrade major roads in support of the new Badgerys Creek airport near Liverpool, New South Wales, funds to initiate the programme have been announced.

The joint investment by the state and federal governments of $164m was part of a huge $7.5bn investment package in the upgrade and construction of critical road, freight and maritime networks announced by Minister for Roads, Maritime and Freight Mr Duncan Gay.

He said the 2015-2016 allocation represents a $2bn rise in funding compared to last year and included many highlights, like the Badgerys Creek airport project.

The announcement follows Prime Minister Tony Abbott’s initial statement over 12 months ago that funding would be forthcoming as a result of the coalition cabinet signing off on the airport’s construction.

He expected work to begin in 2016 and said construction jobs would number up to 4,000 at the peak of development, with the airport and associated industries having the potential to create up to 60,000 jobs in the future.

Mr Abbott described the investment as an infrastructure and jobs package that would create many commercial opportunities, ranging from postcard printing to the supply of transport to ferry travellers to various destinations throughout Sydney.

Mr Abbott described the funding as a growth package for not only the Liverpool and Badgerys Creek areas, but the entire western districts of Sydney.

He told Liverpool Council that upgrades, which included Elizabeth Drive, would be of an extremely high standard.
