Liverpool locals will be treated to a presentation on the history of colonial Australia, which is coming to the suburb in February.
Hosted by Liverpool Regional Museum, the presentation will explore the topic of vagrancy in Australia’s nineteenth-century colonial history.
It will consider the various profiles and characteristics of those more vulnerable to police surveillance in the colonies, drawing particular attention to disability, age and poverty.
Stories of individuals arrested and prosecuted for vagrancy will be shared, and the presentation will serve as a reminder of the socio-economic factors at work in crafting definitions of vagrancy.
The presentation will be delivered by Australian academic, author and historian Catharine Coleborne.
Coleborne’s career has focused particularly on mental institutions and illness. She is a current Professor in the School of Humanities, Creative Industries and Social Sciences at the University of Newcastle, and her work has been recognised internationally.
