The State Government recently announced that it backed a push by the NRL for the construction of several new stadiums across the greater Sydney area.
The Mayor of Liverpool, Wendy Waller, said she welcomed the news as Liverpool was widely recognised as a place of innovation and was deserving of top-tier recreation and cultural facilities that will add to the city's liveability. She added:
“It makes sense to have a new world-class stadium in the home of Western Sydney International Airport and the neighbouring Western Sydney Aerotropolis."
In addition to creating jobs, the mayor said a new stadium would elevate Liverpool's standing as the sporting capital of Sydney's South West. Such attractions are also often featured on brochure printing campaigns aimed at attracting tourists to the area.
The development of a stadium, according to Mayor Waller, needs to be well-planned and the site needs to be selected carefully, bearing in mind such things as connectivity to public transport. This would effectively assist in minimising the venue's impact on the existing road network.
She said the city was already collaborating with Transport for NSW on the Fifteenth Avenue Smart Transit (FAST) Corridor project, which represents the vision for a fast, effective connection between Liverpool and the new international airport. The vision also makes way for technologies that are currently emerging, such as trackless trams and driverless electric buses.
