A programme aimed at addressing the issue of youth disengagement has been introduced in Liverpool, New South Wales.
The youth mentoring initiative was the focus of a recent meeting between Citizenship Minister Victor Dominello, Liverpool Migrant Resource Centre (MRC) members and ethnic community leaders.
The programme will be delivered as part of a joint effort between families, community organisations and schools, according to Dominello.
In a separate meeting with Liverpool City Council representatives, the minister emphasised the positive impact such a programme could have in relation to empowering youth, and females in particular, throughout the entire community.
Liverpool MRC chairman Vincent Ogu agreed, saying the youth mentoring program was a move in the right direction.
He spoke highly of the minister’s interest in actively seeking out solutions to the barriers and issues facing people from a wide range of cultures who wish to participate in the programme.
Dominello had maintained a close liaison with local community leaders and members of the Migrant Resource Centre throughout the development of the Youth Mentoring Programme.
Early discussions had been held to ascertain the problems that existed, and to hear ideas from community members about how to go about solving the issues. Flyer printing helped to attract input from residents.
Dominello said the MRC had provided valuable information and community input.
