New housing estate given the green light

Plans to build 500 homes as part of a new housing estate in Bonnyrigg, near Liverpool, have recently received state government approval.

Minister for Water, Property and Housing Melinda Pavey said the modified Newleaf Bonnyrigg estate's concept plan is set to enhance liveability as it will also include additional facilities for the community and new areas of open space across the site's 81 hectares.

The housing aspect of the development will include 350 private dwellings and another 150 social homes. The cost to deliver the project has been estimated to be $225 million.

The development is part of an 18-stage project initiated by the state's Land and Housing Corporation (LAHC), and it will effectively boost the total of new homes in Bonnyrigg to 3,000, of which 900 will be dedicated to social housing. The project was proposed after the area's original 833 dwellings, built during the 1970s and 1980s, were identified for renewal and redevelopment.

Pavey said the ongoing redevelopment of Bonnyrigg provides an opportunity to deliver an exciting mix of private, affordable and social housing into the area.

Major construction activities such as this have also often assisted the growth and viability of many businesses, ranging from retail outlets to Print shops.

Stages six and seven of the project, which involve the construction of 142 homes in the suburb, are currently underway, while 548 were completed as part of stages one to five. The remaining stages are expected to be complete by 2035.
