Major automated centres for Woolworth's distribution planned

The City of Liverpool is set to host two new automated Woolworths Group distribution centres.

The major supermarket chain recently announced that it has committed to a lease for 20 years with Qube Holdings for a site within the Moorebank Logistics Park.

In addition to between $700-780 million invested towards fit-out and technology by Woolworths, a further $420-460 million will be spent on the construction of the warehouses by Qube Holdings.

The latest project, which builds on Woolworth Group's automated technology installed at its newest Regional Distribution facility that opened in Melbourne South last year, will feature a 34,600sqm automated regional distribution facility and a semi-automated 40,700sqm national distribution facility, due to be operational within 12 months of each other from 2023.

Chairman of Woolworths Group Gordon Cairns said the planned sites are subject to planning approval by the NSW government, adding:

“The planned sites will materially increase our capacity for growth, improve efficiency, advance localised ranging efforts and deliver better and safer experiences for Woolworths stores, team and customers.”

The new facilities, which will see the iconic Woolworths Logo Design on show in Moorebank, are expected to increase the holding capacity of products by more than 30% while the innovative automation will help to speed up the process of restocking of shelves in its many stores.

The construction process of the development is expected to provide in excess of 1,000 jobs.
