Liverpool area to explore food history

An event looking at the relationship between food and history will be held in New South Wales later this year.

Those with a passion for history, culture and food from Liverpool and other suburbs of the city will soon be able to attend an educational experience taking place in Sydney this October. Entitled “History Now: Food History” the talk is hosted by the State Library of New South Wales and is presented by Jacqui Newling and Anna Kharzeeva and chaired by Barbara Sweeney.

Newling, who has a gastronomy master’s degree and specialised in Australian food heritage will discuss the multiple ways that she employs food to interpret and interrogate history for public history audiences and her academic research into colonial settler identity. She firmly believes that food represents far more than sustenance on the plate and that each meal is full of cultural meaning.

A historian and food writer, Moscow-born Kharzeeva will discuss investigating social and family history through food, from cooking and eating to writing about it. Authors often collaborate with experienced printing services to produce a wide range of published works.

The talk will now be held on Wednesday, October 4 at the State Library of New South Wales. The library is located at 1 Shakespeare Place in Sydney; the event will start at 5pm and end at 6pm. Admission is free to all.
