City of Liverpool residents are being urged to help celebrate multiculturalism by contributing to a hand-drawn, interactive artwork currently on show at the Liverpool City Library.
The artwork, which displays the city’s cultural diversity atop a world map, is called ‘Mapping Liverpool’ and was developed by the library with the help of the Western Sydney Migrant Resource Centre and MTC Australia which are locally-based migrant groups, alongside the Casula Powerhouse Arts Centre.
Liverpool Mayor Wendy Waller said the council has proudly put the map on exhibition until March 21 when Harmony Day will be celebrated. She said cultural diversity was among the city’s great strengths, adding:
“The Mapping Liverpool artwork is a way for Council to engage our diverse community and encourage them to share and celebrate their cultural identities. I strongly encourage the community to visit Liverpool City Library in the lead up to Harmony Day to contribute to this fantastic artwork by adding images or a message that’s representative of their country of origin.”
MTC Australia member and resident Ihab Al-Khamees, who was born in Iraq, was delighted to help develop the base artwork for Mapping Liverpool which was undertaken at five workshops.
Residents have until March 21 to add to the Mapping Liverpool artwork.
Meanwhile, promotional materials such as banner printing can be used to promoted occasions such as Harmony Day. This year, Harmony Week is being held Australia-wide from March 17 to 23 for the first time.
