Education steps up as UWS announces big plans for Liverpool

The University of Western Sydney (UWS) is set to become the focus of a major expansion programme in Liverpool, New South Wales.

State Premier Mike Baird recently announced that a state-of-the-art centre of education would be established at the University in 2016.

He said with almost 50 per cent of Liverpool City's population being under the age of 30, the launch of a new centre was a smart move.

The premier acknowledged the city for its strong health and education sectors which, he said, would be complemented by the new UWS facility. This included Liverpool Hospital, which is one of the Southern Hemisphere's largest, and Ingham Institute, a leading cancer research institute.

He predicted a bright future for Liverpool in terms of education and health, which currently employ more than 6,000 people.

In addition to meeting the demand of a growing city, Vice-Chancellor of UWS Barney Glover said the new learning centre would also expand the university's reach throughout Greater Western Sydney.

He said the centre would provide an introductory Smart Business Centre, as well as post graduate offerings regionally targeted and technology-affluent teaching spaces.

Best practice research and teaching programmes are expected to be the main focus of programmes at the Higher Education Centre with Brochures and flyer printing most likely on the agenda.
