What's Happening in Gladesville, NSW…

Trials for first football referee academy kick off this month

Training to help people build strong football refereeing abilities and obtain selection for national title matches has received a shot in the arm following the introduction of the state’s first Referee Academy.

Selected referees from areas including Gladesville and throughout the state could be singled out to attend the new training course.

According to Kris Griffiths-Jones, Football NSW Referees Manager, the aim of the academy was to prepare and assist selected referees for great results at National Titles.

He said success at the titles could put them in contention to be spotted by the FFA for inclusion in the National Talent Pool of referees officiating at Westfield W-League, Hyundai A-League, and National Youth League fixtures.

All the events are subject to extensive marketing services and represent a career pinnacle for many referees, some of whom in the future would have been through the academy, Griffiths-Jones has predicted.

The academy’s innovative programme is set to give all participants a taste of life as a professional referee, according to Griffiths-Jones.

In addition to traditional physical and technical coaching course members will take part in agility and advanced speed training, along with learning psychological aspects of the job and nutritional education. The individual goals of each referee will also be an important aspect of the training schedule.

Trials for entry into the training at the academy are January 13 and 20, and February 6 and 7.
