Transformation of Ryde Civic Hub site sparks international design contest

A design competition with the aim of transforming the Ryde Civic Hub in Devlin Street has been launched.

Reimagining the civic hub is set to benefit the entire City of Ryde, including Gladesville, according to a Council spokesman.

He said creative and talented architects from around the world were being urged to enter the Design our Ryde competition, which has been introduced to reimagine the gateway site as the cultural, commercial and civic heart of Ryde City.

Mayor Jerome Laxale said one of the competition’s key objectives was to involve the community in everything from the site name to the winning concept.

He said it was only fitting that citizens had a say in the future design of such an iconic site.

Printing services and document scanning will likely be needed during the project, with public exhibitions of design concepts made available to ascertain the most popular, before the eventual exhibition of several shortlisted entries for public comment and suggestions of names for the site.

Mayor Laxale said it was hoped architects of all ages and experience would take part in the competition.

Competition entrants, who will vie for a winner’s prize of $150,000, will have to consider seven design objectives including administrative and civic functions, commercial space, and new housing.

A community poll will be conducted at a public exhibition of entries between July 11 and August 1, with the winner announced on August 8.
