Ryde Council endorses new heritage reforms

The protection and identification of heritage items in Gladesville and across the City of Ryde has received a boost, following the endorsement of new reforms by Council.

The reforms will see heritage protection for over 300 items, including street tree boulevards, public parks, Inter-War bungalows, individual Federation structures as well as three heritage conservation sectors.

Bringing the total to eight, the conservation areas are situated at Gladesville’s Tyrell Street and Denistone’s Chatham Road and Darvall Estate. Meanwhile, joining the list of archaeological sites will be Gladesville’s Glades Bay Baths and the former Halvorsen’s Boat Yard and Squire’s Brewery in Putney.

A heritage item review that took place last year was used to identify items to be included in the reforms, according to Mayor Jerome Laxale who added:

“These reforms – the most wide-ranging in generations – have corrected poor heritage policies of the past and have placed strong protections on our most treasured items which will now stand for generations to come.”

Ryde holds the distinction of being third in New South Wales oldest settlements and its many heritage sites have often been featured in Books and promotional brochure printing. The Mayor said heritage protection has long been sought by residents.

The new list of heritage items will be accompanied by a Heritage Assistance Fund increase to further assist owners of heritage items with costs associated with conserving, restoring or repairing them.
