Rare bird species uncovered in backyard bird count

Catalogues of bird species have helped identify some of the many birds that fly into the backyards of Gladesville homes every day.

More than 100 residents from throughout the City of Ryde, New South Wales, took part in a nationwide audit conducted as part of the Aussie Backyard Bird Count.

Mayor of Ryde, Cr Jerome Laxale, said an estimated 42,000 nature lovers nationwide took part in the event which was held to assist in keeping track of the population of birds across the country.

Participants were required to register the birds they saw around them and this, according to the Mayor, led to 82 bird species and 3152 birds recorded in a week within the City of Ryde.

As in many other areas the Rainbow Lorikeet, which has featured on many Calendars and Postcards throughout the years, took top spot with 865 local sightings recorded.

The Ryde environs also revealed the Brown Treecreeper and Powerful Owl, which are both among Australia’s most vulnerable species as well as the endangered Australiasian Bittern.

Mayor Laxale said with so many beautiful bushland areas, open spaces, leafy glades and parks in the city, the need to protect the natural environment including the birdlife was extremely important.

He said residents would have another opportunity to take part in the Aussie Backyard Bird Count in October 2016. Council will also be conducting a survey of Flora and Fauna later in the year.
