Library revamp after 60-year service to community

Gladesville Library has recently reopened following a $160,000 upgrade that has left it looking fresh and new.

The refurbishment programme was widespread, according to Mayor of Ryde Bill Pickering who said the makeover included a new interior layout, carpets and a contemporary colour scheme in repainted areas.

He said there were also many innovations including a dedicated zone for digital printing services and public computers, as well as mobile printing services and WiFi.

The Mayor said that during the past 60 years, Gladesville Library has provided a myriad of popular programmes and services that are highly valued within the community.

The new interior and layout, he said, reflects the changing nature of libraries that were once a quiet place to study or read but now represent a vibrant community hub that caters for many people and services.

Since 1957, Gladesville Library has been the subject of a Joint Library Agreement between Hunters Hill Council and the City of Ryde.

Patronage of the library during the 2015 and 2016 year total 62,000 with a 14.3 per cent increase expected by the close of the 2016 to 2017 financial year, according to the Mayor.

Included in the extensive collection of non-fiction and fiction Books are eMagazines, eBooks, eAudiobooks and publications covering technology, travel, romance, mysteries, gardening and cooking.

Located in Pittwater Road, Gladesville, the newly renovated library is open from 10:00 am to 8:00 pm Monday, Tuesday and Thursday, 10:00 am to 5:00 pm Wednesday and Friday, and 9.30 am to 12 noon on Saturday.
