Events programme celebrates Australia Day 2017

Gladesville residents will be able to join in a host of celebrations planned by the City of Ryde on Australia Day.

Mayor of Ryde Bill Pickering said the day will include a Citizenship Ceremony at which 50 new citizens will be sworn in and given an opportunity to sing the country’s national anthem for the very first time as true Australians.

He said those participating came from diverse backgrounds spread across 21 countries including Iran, the Philippines, Sri Lanka and the United Kingdom.

The annual event, which has been widely advertised on Flyers and Brochures, will also include the announcement of the area’s 2017 Young Citizen of the Year and Citizen of the Year, which the Mayor described as the highest awards bestowed on any individual by the city.

The awards, he said, recognise outstanding service as well as acknowledging the lasting and positive impact their individual actions have had on the community.

Residents will also have an opportunity to celebrate Australia Day on January 26 with all the fun and spectacle of the annual family concert to be held from 5pm to 9pm at North Ryde Common.

A giant lawn twister and a thong throwing contest will be featured events at the celebrations which will also include food trucks, sports, rides, a firework display and entertainment by The Reel Matilda, Vulture Street Powderfinger tribute and Steve Hart & The All Stars.
