Council considers $276m plans to redevelop main shopping strip

A Chinese property developer has come up with an ambitious plan that would see 13-storey apartment buildings, a market hall and two new streets for pedestrians created in Rowe Street and Rutledge Street, Eastwood.

This is the second attempt by Yuhu Group to transform the site, after first submitting an application to build 30-storey residential buildings two years ago.

The largely commercial area services suburbs within the City of Ryde, including Gladesville, New South Wales. The latest redevelopment proposal submitted to Ryde Council is estimated to cost in the vicinity of $276m.

Graphic designs of the plans reveal seven new multistorey residential buildings, additional underground parking, and two levels of offices and shops.

It is proposed the retail sector would include a medical centre, pharmacy, fast food, fresh food and two supermarkets.

According to the application, the name `Market Hall’ would be used to describe the redeveloped shopping space.

Pedestrian-only streets called The Laneway and The Street are also proposed for establishment to connect Rutledge Street and Rowe Street, and to provide access for shoppers to Market Hall.

A spokesman for the Yuhu Group said the objective was to present a design that made people feel connected to all the new spaces, including the retail components and the revitalised Rowe Street Mall.

If approval is given for the Development Application, Yuhu will also spend $1.4m on upgrading the Rowe Street Plaza.
