Competition to showcase Citys top gardeners

Green thumbs in Gladesville and throughout the City of Ryde have been busy preparing for this year’s annual Spring Garden Competition.

The major hands-on community event has been a major fixture on gardeners’ Calendars for in excess of 30 years, and represents a celebration of everything horticultural and botanical, according to City of Ryde Council organisers.

Mayor Jerome Laxale said the competition gives locals, aged 3 to 80, the opportunity to showcase their gardening skills, including sustainability, design, and propagation.

He said the 2016 event also welcomed a new Children’s Seed Growing Competition that has captured the imagination of many young gardeners, including his own children.

The City of Ryde’s Mayor described the annual event as a “celebration of community” and said it put a focus on the work undertaken to create an attractive and welcoming neighbourhood of which everyone could be proud.

The 12 categories listed in competition Catalogues, he said, provided plenty of scope for all ages and he encouraged entries from everyone including cultural and community groups, families, individual gardeners, seasoned seniors, and aspiring young green thumbs, as well as small business and commercial organisations.

August 31 is the deadline for entries, which are free for City of Ryde businesses, organisations and residents.

A special Gala Event will be held at Eden Gardens on October 27 to announce the 2016 Spring Garden Competition place-getters and winners.
