Surf club redevelopment gains green light

The Long Reef Surf Club, which services a wide area including Brookvale, is set to be redeveloped following financial endorsement by the Northern Beaches Council.

According to estimates supplied by a quantity survey as part of the development application, the project is expected to cost around $6.9 million to complete. The federal government will contribute $1.9 million with a further $3.1 million to be provided by the Stronger Communities Fund and the balance to be funded by Council.

Mayor of Northern Beaches, Michael Regan is confident the surf club will become an important community asset, adding:

“Once completed, the project will not only support surf lifesaving activities, it will also provide important community spaces and facilities.’’

Often detailed in a graphic design accompanying the development application, the facilities to be included in the project incorporate everything from a lifesaving equipment storage room to a kitchen and training rooms.

Regan said the project has involved a close working relationship between community members, architects, the club and council staff over a two year period to bring to fruition fit-for-purpose amenities that benefit members and visitors and blend well with the local environment.

Located in Pittwater Road, the Long Reef Surf Life Saving Club has been operating since 1950. It began with 29 members and now boasts more than 750.

Work is set to begin this year once the successful construction tenderer has been appointed.
