The experience of working in Afghanistan’s province of Uruzgan alongside Australian troops, caught up in a protracted period of civil unrest and conflict, has been immortalised in a stirring performance called Dust of Uruzgan.
The two-hour live stage performance – soon to be seen by music buffs of Brookvale, New South Wales, and surrounding areas – is the work of acclaimed singer-songwriter Fred Smith.
The performer has turned his candid insight into the imminent dangers and daily problems faced by our country’s soldiers in the troubled region into a stirring musical tribute, which is being applauded nationwide.
Inspiring songs with powerful lyrics pave a musical journey for audiences, with the title track, Dust of Uruzgan, among the most poignant. Other songs include Woman in a War, Christmas in Kandahar, Live Like an Afghan, Taliban Fighting Man, and Sapper’s Lullaby.
Smith is not only a revered singer-songwriter, but also wears another hat as a diplomat for the Department of Foreign Affairs. It was as a diplomat that he found himself in Afghanistan in 2009, with the ultimate goal of improving understanding and co-operation between coalition forces and the local community.
His album Dust of Uruzgan provides a unique combination of songs, stories and memories from his tour of duty, which lasted 18 months. His experiences were also the subject of a featured ABC TV presentation entitled Australian Story.
Promotional poster and brochure printing depicts a thoughtful Smith no doubt ready to tell his story in music, live on stage, to those who attend his show on July 26th.
