The local economy's unique nature has been laid out in the draft strategy, together with the opportunities and challenges that are ahead in the next decade, according to Mayor of Northern Beaches Michael Regan, who added:
“Our vision is for a more diverse, innovative, vibrant and green economy. A local economy that is sustainable, both in an economic and an environmental sense.”
He said there were many talented and highly skilled people within Northern Beaches who could make a valuable contribution to the area's economy if more job opportunities were available.
Identified in the strategy are exciting opportunities such as innovation in the creation of new hubs or spaces for more knowledge-based businesses. There is also a particular focus on entrepreneurship, home-based and start-up businesses, and much more. The plan also identified key challenges ranging from traffic congestion and no major CBD to protecting warehousing and industrial areas, where often graphic design and printing services can often be found. It also lists proposed revitalisation of major employment areas such as Brookvale.
The expansion of the business support service run by the council and the establishment of a business advisory forum made up of local businesses has also been put forward. The public have until 26 March to have a say on the Business on the Beaches strategy.
