Northern Beaches story nominated for four Golden Globes

The 2017 Golden Globe Awards in January will see a locally inspired film feature in the nominations.

A movie called ‘Lion’, which stars Slumdog Millionaire’s Dev Patel and Australian icon Nicole Kidman, will go into the highly coveted awards night with four nominations including two for Best Supporting Actor, Best Original Score and Best Motion Picture (Drama).

The deal that inspired the movie script for the big screen was procured by Shahen Mekertichian, of Manly and Collaroy’s Andrew Fraser, and tells the story of a poor young Indian boy named Saroo Brierley who, at five years old, loses his family and is placed in an orphanage only to be adopted later by a couple from Tasmania.

Two decades on, Saroo used Google Maps to track down his original Indian village, where he eventually returned to meet up with his loved ones once again.

The experience inspired him to document his life in a book entitled `A Long Way From Home’.

The Brookvale-based Sunstar Entertainment company, owned by Andrew Fraser, has been enlisted to co-produce the film with See-Saw Films, which gained great recognition from its success as the firm behind The King’s Speech.

According to Fraser, the movie’s success in attracting four Gold Globe Award nominations is a tribute to the many people who worked diligently to see Lion become a reality.

He said marketing services in recent months have been busy promoting the film for its Australian premiere.
