Kids first therapy dog a comforting presence

A Brookvale psychologist has partnered up with his canine assistant Brando to help children feel more at ease when attending therapy sessions.

Psychologist, Lincoln Comans first paired up with Brando in Hunter Valley and is now working at the Brookvale Kids First facility.

The border collie who came from a neglected family before being taken in by Lincoln, suffers with anxiety, but has quickly gained a reputation for his calming and gentle nature. Kids First founder, Sonya Walker says the dog is exciting for the children to have around, parents can relax and everyone is happy.

While Brando’s presence is reassuring, the cuddly dog is also an important therapy tool, helping children to better understand their behaviour through the interchange and responses of the animal.

Studies show that the presence of a pet during therapy helps children to feel safe and confident about talking to a psychologist with international studies showing evidence that pets help children on the autism spectrum build better social connections and communication skills.

The facility is fully staffed with professional therapists and teachers to help with a wide range of learning and behavioural issues. Printing services can be used by facilities such as this to provide informational Brochures to patients.

Lincoln and Brando work at the Kids First facility in Brookvale on Thursdays and Saturdays.
