Iranian Asian Cup team set for last-minute training on Northern Beaches

Sydney’s Northern Beaches has been selected as the training base for Iran’s AFC Asian Cup team.

Residents of the Warringah Council area, which includes suburbs like Curl Curl, Collaroy and Brookvale, New South Wales, will be close to the action as the team conduct a gruelling training programme in readiness for the 2015 competition. Iran has won the tournament three times.

Team members will be encouraged to experience the beach and surf culture that has made the area famous, according to NSW Premier Mike Baird.

Warringah Mayor Michael Regan said the team’s visit would not only be good for the sport, but also boost the local economy.

Iran will be chasing a first or second group placing in the first match against rivals Qatar – the current Gulf Cup champions – and the United Arab Emirates.

The event has been described as the biggest ever football tournament in Australia. If small venues hope to use the tournament to bring in more customers, they can turn to banner printing.

Other countries to have announced pre-competition training venues around Australia have included Korea Republic (Ryde, NSW), Uzbekistan (Rockdale) and Saudi Arabia (Torquay).

Sixteen nations will compete in the 2015 Asian Cup.

Training for the Iranian team will be conducted on the Northern Beaches from December 30th to January 7th, after which the team will head to Melbourne to play their first match on January 11th against Bahrain.
