Gallery celebrates nine decades of artistic excellence

Manly Art Gallery and Museum (MAG&M), near Brookvale is currently hosting a special exhibition to mark the celebration of its 90th birthday.

The ‘90 Years: Treasures from the Vault' exhibition is showcasing a special selection of works which have been acquired since the gallery opened in 1930.

Described by Mayor of the Northern Beaches, Michael Regan as presenting a rare insight into some of the area's stories and history, the display features ceramics, photographs and paintings acquired through artists, private donors, the Cultural Gifts Programme, the Theo Batten Bequest and the facility's local society.

According to Katherine Roberts, Senior Curator, the collection is ever-growing and boasts works from some of the best artists Australia has to offer. She added:

“In the exhibition, our foyer display reveals MAG&M’s earliest acquisition of a 1923 painting by James R. Jackson alongside one of our most recent acquisitions of a 2019 digital Print by contemporary artist Joan Ross.”

Encompassing three galleries, the exhibition takes the form of six major narratives consisting of Manly, Water, Trees, Still Life, Figuration and Artists at Work. An extensive collection of ceramics is also on view in the gallery's upstairs exhibition area. Exhibitions such as this are often promoted through flyer printing campaigns.

The venue, which is running the 90th birthday celebratory exhibition until August 3, is renowned as a vital hub of creative learning, live music and art.
