Course offers chance to learn more about sustainable living

Residents of Brookvale who want to learn more about developing agricultural ecosystems as a step towards being more self-sufficient and living a more sustainable lifestyle are being offered an opportunity to have their questions answered.

Permaculture Northern Beaches is holding a two-day intensive workshop on sustainable living and permaculture at the Kimbriki Resource and Recovery Centre.

A spokeswoman for the organisers said the course will be wide ranging and incorporate topics that have been highlighted many times in booklet printing by industry leaders. They include permaculture design, site analysis, soil, sustainable housing and gardening.

She described the course as a great overview of permaculture and a necessary step towards incorporating its practices into everyday life.

Each participant will receive a certificate to verify their completion of the Introduction to Permaculture course, as well a copy of leading author on the topic Bill Mollison’s book.

Mollison and David Holmgren began developing permaculture systems in Australia in the mid-1970s, and has since written a number of Books on the subject and lectured in more than 80 countries.

The course will provide an opportunity for those taking part to also gain practical experience at the centre, which hosts an Eco Garden that includes a permaculture garden, aquaponics, native bee hive, compost toilets and recycled buildings.

Moss Living’s Margaret Mossakowska will join senior ecologist Peter Rutherford and Michelle Sheather as teachers for the course, which takes place on April 2 and 3.
