Beachside enhancement trial to go ahead

Dee Why's waterside precinct, which has become a popular place for residents of nearby Brookvale and across the Northern Beaches region, is to receive some enhancements on a trial basis.

The proposal, which was recently approved by Northern Beaches Council, will see the area made more cyclist and pedestrian-friendly. It advocates to enhance the cyclist, pedestrian and dining experience along the seaside strip, which runs 220 metres between Dee Why Parade and Oaks Avenue.

The trial will also see spaces for car parking moved to allow for more seating, a one-way flow of traffic trial and the introduction of bicycle lanes running both ways on the road, as well as the rerouting of bus services south-bound.

Community feedback has shown the proposal had attracted great interest, and while support was generally good, there had also been some reservations, according to Mayor of Northern Beaches Michael Regan.

He said the proposal's aim was to make the beach precinct much better for bicycle and foot traffic and to allow for activation projects that bring energy to the streets and help create new community connections. The mayor added:

“Preference will be given to existing footpath to be converted to dining space and parking spaces used as a new boardwalk and additional pedestrian crossings will be installed in surrounding streets.”

Beachside locations such as this have often been promoted via tourism brochure printing campaigns. The implementation of the trial is scheduled for late in July, with a review set to be conducted early next year.
