Alexandria residents have an opportunity to volunteer to fill the role of cruise ship ambassadors for the City of Sydney, New South Wales.
The City’s Lord Mayor, Clover Moore said volunteers are required to provide cruise ship passengers with advice on Sydney’s many attractions, including tourist spots, galleries, museums, theatres, restaurants and world-class shops.
He said locals, who are experts on Sydney and what is has to offer, can point visitors towards the many attractions they have previously only read about on tourist Brochures and Postcards.
According to the Lord Mayor, cruise ship arrivals are the tourism sector’s fastest growing area, which has boosted the need for local volunteers to help out with maps, directions, tourist advice and informed knowledge of the area’s many points of interest.
Ensuring all visitors’ trips to Sydney and surrounding suburbs are memorable, smooth and unique, he said, is the main aim of cruise ship ambassadors.
To address a rising demand for people to assist international visitors arriving at White Bay and the Overseas Passenger Terminal during the 2017 summer season, upward of 60 ambassadors is being enlisted, according to Moore.
He said some cruise ships, such as the Ovation of the Seas with its 5,000 passengers, will sail into the city docks eight times during that period.
Moore said the ambassador programme operates until April and last year volunteers greeted passengers aboard more than 290 vessels.
