Kathryn Heyman, an award-winning author in her own right, will be interviewing Debra Oswald, twice winner of the NSW Premier’s Literary Award. They will be speaking about Oswald’s latest book, One Hundred Years of Betty.
The book refers to the central character, Betty, who is revealing her life story on the eve of her hundredth birthday party. From an impoverished home in pre-war London, Betty migrated to Australia to broaden her horizons. She is a strong and intelligent woman who has to be resilient throughout her life, as she encounters social upheaval such as being part of the anti-war protests in the 1960s and liberation for women in the 1970s.
A recent review of the book states:
“Oswald writes older women with the panache, wit and steeliness that many of us will recognise in our mothers, grandmothers and aunts who traversed a century that was never quite ready for them.”
