Syd Hickman, owner’s committee chairman of Olivia Gardens apartments, a 69 unit complex, described the lack of government consultation as “pretty crazy.” He is waiting to hear from the Transport Minister, Gladys Berejiklian. Hickman said:
“They put out these glossy Brochures…they must have a plan.”
Olivia Gardens residents face an uncertain future while they wait for a government response. Some may have to sell their apartments or move into aged care. Ms Berejiklian conceded that further design consultation was required before the route through Surry Hills could be confirmed. She said:
“I can appreciate that local residents are keen to know what the route will be and the government will make sure they are notified as soon as possible.”
Maps unveiled in December depict the tram line progressing from Bourke St to Moore Park - straight through the apartment complex. Residents are calling on the government to end uncertainty. Ms Berejiklian stated that the route is an indicative alignment only, and that government ministers and consultants are working as fast as they can to clarify matters.
The light rail plan has been favourably accepted by most eastern and southern Sydney residents, from Alexandria to Bondi, with speculation the line may even be extended all the way to Bondi Beach.
