The 2.4 kilometre route will be opened this month and will connect Alexandria and surrounding suburbs Zetland, Waterloo, and Redfern with the central city.
Sydney’s lord mayor, Clover Moore, said the cycleway would provide a better opportunity for cyclists to get around and would benefit the new residents set to move into the area after its redevelopment. She said:
“Sydney’s newest cycleway will provide a safe transport option for current and future residents of Green Square – the city’s fastest growing community. With 40,000 residents expected to move to the area between now and 2030, it’s essential we create a mix of transport options including walking and cycling.”
The cycleway’s opening will be celebrated with a community event in Prince Alfred Park on Saturday, June 14th.
During the event, people will be able to find out more about the new route and about cycling safely. Printing services have also been used to create coupons for free coffee, which can be redeemed at a number of cafes along the route. Cyclists who get a special stamp at the event and at the Saturday market in nearby Joynton Park will be entered in a draw to win cycling equipment.
The opening party will be held from 11am to 2pm.
