A historic Alexandria hotel could get heritage status if the City of Sydney Council is successful.
The Alexandria Hotel on Henderson Road was built in the 1930s and has been a popular local pub for several years, being a favourite with fans of the Sydney Swans team.
The site was earmarked for development, with the hotel set to be demolished and replaced by apartments, but some residents have been trying to save the building, which they say has architectural significance.
The group had been using flyer printing and social media to create interest about their campaign, as well as attending council get-togethers and meetings with the potential developer.
Now, the City of Sydney Council has recommended that the 80-year-old hotel is given a local heritage listing.
Lord Mayor Clover Moore said the pub helped to maintain the city’s links to its past, and to give the streetscape character.
The council had asked for a heritage assessment earlier this year, but the developer’s application was lodged before any heritage listing had been considered. A temporary listing was imposed while further investigations were carried out.
To be listed, a building must meet at least one of seven points developed by the New South Wales Heritage Council. The Alexandria Hotel meets five of the seven.
The heritage listing must now be approved by the Minister for Planning after a consultation period.
