The 2030 Greening Sydney programme sets the actions, targets and directions for all types of greening undertakings, including enterprising canopy targets, along with creative plans to boost green streetscape, walls and roof gardening.
The plan follows the first of the city's greening strategies introduced in 2012, which saw its canopy cover increase over a 10-year period, according to Lord Mayor of Sydney Clover Moore, who added:
“We have developed this strategy to re-affirm and extend our commitment to providing a greener, cooler, calmer and more resilient City. We have set ambitious targets and will work to ensure 40% of the City’s footprint is covered with greenery by 2050.”
Moore said urban greenery, such as trees, is essential for providing extensive and effective shading to help decrease temperatures by anywhere up to 10 degrees on the ground.
Such initiatives have long been the focus of informational brochure printing campaigns aimed at educating the public about innovative ways to combat climate change.
The city has allocated $377 million to administer the greening initiatives, which will include the renewal and development of open spaces and existing parks throughout the city during the next decade. Each year, the area will also see about 700 trees planted in city streets.
