Home and business owners in Alexandria and across Sydney are being targeted in a new campaign to highlight changes to the city's voting rules.
The alterations mean that people may need to appear on a new register if they wish to have a say in council elections in future.
The change comes after the New South Wales government amended the City of Sydney Act to require details of nonresidents who may still be eligible to vote. This includes property owners and lessees who pay rates, including businesses, even if the individuals are registered on a residential role elsewhere.
While the new regulations are most likely to affect Sydney business owners, they will also mean anyone who owns an investment property in the city will have to register even if they live somewhere else in Australia or overseas.
The council has used printing services to create a letter that will be sent to 120,000 businesses and other rate payers to explain the new rules, as well as launching a publicity campaign in Print, on the radio and on social media this month. Council staff will also be visiting local businesses to explain how it will affect companies.
