Creative residents in Alexandria will be able to unleash their flair in the coming years, with a new creative hub to be built in the nearby Green Square development.
The venue will be created in the former South Sydney Hospital buildings, which are now heritage listed.
The three-storey building was used to house nurses during the Second World War but the former dormitories will soon be home to artists and budding artists.
The City of Sydney has accepted a tender to develop the building into workshops, classrooms, studios and gallery spaces as part of the Green Square town centre development.
Outside, a new roof will be built to provide a sheltered outdoor space for yoga classes, markets and concerts. Poster printing and Brochures are often used to advertise events once centres like this are up and running
The hospital’s old pathology building will be turned into a community shed with workshops and toilets alongside a new open space and children’s play area.
The plans were finalised following a community consultation where residents asked for more facilities for activities, including book clubs, painting and creative writing.
Around 60,000 people will eventually reside in the new area, which includes parts of Alexandria, Roseberry, Waterloo, Beaconsfield and Redfern. The new town centre is being developed as part of the urban area and will include apartments and community facilities.
