Indoor courts double for community sports

Indoor sporting facilities have been increased in Alexandria with the recent enclosure of two outdoor sports courts at Perry Park.

This latest innovation at the busy sporting precinct effectively boosts the indoor court availability to four and, in so doing, has created all-weather courts for basketball, volleyball, badminton, futsal and netball. As a result of the work, the indoor facility can now host larger crowds on the tiered seating, as well as futsal games at the international level for the first time.

Lord Mayor of Sydney Clover Moore said that providing accessible and diverse recreational facilities for use by the community was important, a fact not lost on the council. She added:

“We're delighted to be able to provide more quality indoor courts for local sporting groups, schools, residents and workers in this growing neighbourhood.”

Moore said the recreation centres and local open space for people living within the inner city played an important role in providing spaces to meet, exercise and play.

Often, flyer printing campaigns have been launched to make locals more aware of community facilities, such as the new indoor courts at the Recreation Centre at Perry Park, which first opened its doors in 2019. Various sports competitions are run at the centre, which also offers court hire.

The work is part of the transformation of the old waste site, with the next phase set to begin early 2023 to include a multipurpose FIFA-sized sports field, covered outdoor area, spectator seating, open lawn and amenities.
