Scheduled to open officially in September, the new facilities will include not only a wealth of reading materials but also a vintage aircraft suspended from the ceiling.
The artwork, that will also feature a miniature world, was created by Sean Cordeiro and Claire Healy.
Proposed plans, including detailed graphic design of the underground library, formed part of the Green Square plaza and library project development application submitted in 2014.
According to the application, it was designed to sit below ground with the concept aimed at allowing open spaces to:
`flow up over the top and create a larger public area’
It also stated that the state-of-the-art facility would include:
“a sunken garden that bathes the library in natural light while providing a place for children to play, an amphitheatre with timber seating for up to 160 people and a library entrance located in a dramatic glass structure that soars 15 metres."
The seven-storey library tower will have much to offer including reading rooms extending two floors, a community room for meetings and workshops, an acoustically-designed room for music and also facilities for video and sound editing in a technology suite.
Located 4km from Sydney CBD in Alexandria the plaza and library development is estimated to cost $47 million.
