The winning architects won the opportunity to design the $40 million project on the southern fringe of the Sydney city centre. Sydney’s Mayor, Clover Moore, announced Felicity Stewart and Matthias Hollenstein as winners; both are still in their 20s. The competition attracted over 160 entries from 29 countries and Alexandria Print companies eagerly await the final design.
Initial architectural concepts for the plaza include sunken gardens, rolling hills, music rooms, an amphitheatre and a water play area. It will even be large enough to host movies, concerts, and festivals. The Green Square centrepiece library will serve residents of local suburbs, including Alexandria and Waterloo. When complete, the urban development will be home to 40,000 residents: an amazing turnaround for previously neglected industrial suburbs on the city fringe.
Design jury member Glen Murcutt is over the moon at the winning concept. He said:
“It’s fantastic…it has the potential to be one of the most exciting places to be in Sydney.”
The council had stipulated its desire for an attractive, sustainable and functional space capable of attracting visitors from a broad spectrum of society, for a range of cultural activities. Ms Stewart believes her young firm nailed the brief. She said:
“The nicest part is that this is a concept we are absolutely passionate about because it puts people above everything.”
