The Green Square Plaza and Library is coming to fruition following the latest move by Sydney City Council to sign a construction contract with John Holland, an infrastructure and engineering firm.
The district referred to as Green Square is located across the suburbs of Beaconsfield, Waterloo, Zetland and Alexandria, New South Wales.
The $47m undertaking will feature a civic plaza with waterplay area and lawn for children, together with an underground library that hosts an amphitheatre and open-air garden.
City Projects and Property Director Amit Chanan said workers and residents will be able to enjoy vibrant open space provided as part of the plaza and library project, which was inspired by the popular European Squares known as piazzas. He said there will be plenty of space for visitors and residents to relax, exercise, play, learn and interact.
A glass tower reaching seven storeys will rise above the plaza and house a technology suite, music recital room, reading room and multipurpose room for use by the community.
Community festivals and special performances will feature on event Calendars at the plaza, with markets, outdoor film screenings and Chinese New Year among the many special activities planned.
Chanan said Ford Civil Contracting had already completed early works at the site, which is now ready for the main works by John Holland to begin.
The plaza and library project has an expected completion target of 2018.
