Digital screens to feature in new street furniture roll out

Street furniture throughout the City of Sydney, including Alexandria, will be the target of an innovative upgrade in 2021.

A contract representing a 10-year deal between the City and QMS Media was recently signed, which will see the implementation of a new look suite of innovatively designed public toilets, kiosks and bus shelters. Each will come complete with digital screens and replace the existing furniture which, in most cases, has been a part of city life since 1997.

The move follows a lengthy period which involved a call for expressions of interest, tenders as well as direct negotiations revolving around outdoor advertising. Lord Mayor of Sydney, Clover Moore explained that the introduction of digital panels with the new array of furniture will be a refreshing and modern addition to city streets, adding:

“This deal means we will have the capability to display real-time event, transport and emergency information on modern, sustainably designed and energy-efficient street furniture.”

Some of the new items will also include advertising panels with the revenue it raises able to be directed into the area's public domain. It is also anticipated that a portion of the advertising funds received will be channelled towards the display of community messages, public information and the promotion of local initiatives and events on the digital panels.

Commercial enterprises often use this type of display to create awareness about business events, specials and Promotional Products.

The work will be carried out in stages from mid-2021.
