The major facility, the largest of its type built since 2000, incorporates a host of facilities, including 50-metre and 25-metre pools, with the latter featuring a huge moveable pool floor, together with a hydrotherapy pool, water playground, gym, cafe, sports field and creche.
An impressive five-star rating has been applied to the centre due to its design and its energy, water and waste initiatives, according to Lord Mayor of Sydney Clover Moore, who added:
“Our new aquatic centre is not only beautiful and fun, it’s the first in Australia to achieve a five-star sustainability rating. It also features a full array of accessibility features, so it’s a place for everyone to enjoy."
Moore said the designers and architects gained inspiration from Sydney's ocean pools, especially in relation to the big lap pool, which has been set amid generous recreation spaces to give the effect of being at the beach.
The mayor described the outdoor 50-metre lap pool as the development's jewel, saying the edge of the city's coastline had inspired its unusual shape.
Activities at major venues, such as the new aquatic centre, are often widely advertised via local flyer printing campaigns.
Moore said the moveable floor in the smaller indoor pool was a great innovation, and it would allow the pool to be lowered or raised to cater for activities such as kid's swimming classes and water polo.
