What's Happening in Seattle, WA…

Upcoming festival celebrates the memory of ancestors

The 84th annual Bon Odori Festival is taking place in Seattle for two days this July.

Presented by Seafair, the festival is a traditional Japanese summer celebration that honors deceased friends and family members through remembrance and the showing of gratitude.

The event will feature opening services, and there will be Japanese folk dancing performances in the street, Taiko drumming, martial arts displays from local dojos, and a beer garden.

Many of the participants will come garbed in traditional Japanese dress.

Food vendors will be selling a variety of dishes and drinks. There will also be arts and crafts vendors, traditional craft exhibits, and artistic demonstrations. There will be something taking place at any time throughout the afternoon event, so it will keep the entire family entertained.

This Seattle event will attract many Japanese residents in the community, but it will no doubt also attract those who are interested in learning more about the traditions of this east Asian island nation. The area’s print companies often help to advertise such events by providing marketing materials like flyers and brochures. These can then be inexpensively and quickly distributed all over the city.

The Bon Odori Festival will be held at the Seattle Betsuin Buddhist Church from July 18th to 19th, beginning at 4:00pm. Admission is free of charge. To learn more about the festival, call 206-329-0800.
